COOPERSVILLE, MI (WHTC) - A dozing milk tanker driver caused some pain to himself and a lot of headaches for his fellow motorists yesterday. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin and his fellow deputies spent four hours on I-96 near the 48th Avenue exit east of Coopersville dealing with a morning rush hour crash. Phillip Sage apparently fell asleep at the wheel, which caused his eastbound truck to run over the median cable barriers and cross the westbound lanes before slamming into a ditch, causing the vehicle to tip over.
Rescue crews had to extricate the 48-year-old Muskegon man from his rig, and before he was taken to Hackley Hospital in his hometown for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Sage was cited, and his operator’s license will be reviewed by the Secretary of State’s office. Traffic crawled along the crash site through one open lane for more than four hours during clean-up efforts, and at least two minor accidents related to this slowdown occurred during this time. The incident remains under investigation.
