UNDATED (WKZO) --- The effort to make sure sex offenders in the state are registered is showing results. Operation Verify led to the arrest of 51 people by a police task force in October, 8 of them in South West Michigan, according to State Police.
Warrants were sought for 28 more. The month-long operation was designed to increase compliance with the sex offender registration laws.
Over 90 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies were involved statewide which also resulted in 116 warrants issued for violations of the Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act.
A recent operation in Detroit led to the arrest of 70 people for not complying with the law. The penalty for not getting registered with the state is up to two years in jail.
