Michigan Supreme Court hears case of a unique Portage family

PORTAGE (WKZO) -- When does life begin? A case out of Portage tries to stretch the concept perhaps further than it’s ever been stretched before.

Most arguments begin with life starting when the sperm hits the egg, and goes from there. Yesterday [thu] Attorney Victor Bland argued before the State Supreme Court that for his clients, it began when Jeff Mattison made a deposit at a sperm bank, knowing that his health was failing and might preclude them from having more kids.

Bland wants the Justices to declare the twins who would later be born using in-vitro fertilization to be declared Mattison’s heirs, making them eligible for Social Security survivor’s benefits.

The judges seemed skeptical.

The attorney for the state argued the law is fairly straight forward, that only 'living heirs' can inherit the property of a relative, or their rights to claim social security benefits according to the Government. . .

They will rule in a few months.
