METAMORA (WKZO) -- It was once a stagecoach stop, but today, after 162 years of continuous service, the White Horse Inn in Metamora is closing. Owner Tim Wilkins made the announcement Wednesday night via an email.
The aging building needed immediate and major repairs, and Wilkins indicated in his email that a decision had been made to forego the repairs and permanently close. Wilkins, and his wife Lisa, ran the White Horse for the last twelve years, and say the decision to close was heart wrenching.
Although it has always housed a restaurant, the historic building has operated as an inn, general store, stagecoach stop, and is even said to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad.
