Holland BPW Board Nixes Proposed Short-Term Franchise Contract Extensions

HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - The controversy over representation on the board of the Holland Board of Public Works continued yesterday when the panel rejected requests by Fillmore, Laketown and Park townships for one-year extensions of their current franchise agreements that brings municipal power, water and sewer service to those suburban communities. The townships are seeking to have more than just one person representing them totally and to have one person each be an ex-officio, non-voting member.

Holland Township voters a week ago approved a new franchise agreement with the BPW that has one rep on the board for all of the suburban entities. It was not immediately known what move the other three townships will make next, and utility officials say that they are continuing to pursue long-term extensions with those entities that comprise five percent of the BPW customer base.
