ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) - The search for a new superintendent of Zeeland Public Schools could end shortly. School Board members will meet behind closed doors with retained consultant Mike Washburn, the one-time Forest Hills school chief, who has conducted a stealth-like, confidential search since Dave Barry resigned under pressure in July following a plagiarism scandal and is now a part-time professor at Western Michigan University. Washburn will recommend one person out of nine who had applied in this “targeted search” process, and if the board concurs, a public interview process will begin with the candidate. If the board doesn’t concur, or if the recommended candidate is not hired, then a more open search will commence. Interim superintendent Gary Feenstra, whose retirement after 18 years at the helm was halted when Dr. Barry stepped down, has assisted Washburn in the search process.
