HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) - A 24-year-old Grand Valley State student from the Irish Hills who stepped out of a hotel party on Holland’s North Side, apparently to grab a smoke, stepped into his death on Saturday night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin, 60-year-old Rex Slingerland was driving his SUV northbound on US-31, apparently heading towards his Grand Haven home, and didn’t see the Brooklyn, Michigan man walking into his path. Kyle Ackerman was dressed all in black, making him harder to see, and was trying to cross US-31 against a green light for that highway when he was struck. Ackerman was pronounced dead at the scene; Slingerland was not hurt. Austin added that alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation.
