Hope, GVSU Wrap Up Football Seasons; Flying Dutch Fall in NCAA Volleyball


UNDATED (WHTC) - The college football season along the Lakeshore ends on Saturday, as both Hope and Grand Valley State are not going to gain NCAA tournament berths. The Flying Dutchmen conclude at Albion, with broadcast time on 92.7 The Van and http://927thevan.com/listen-live/ at 12:40 PM, while the Lakers finish up at Saginaw Valley State.

State major college football on Saturday finds Michigan hosting Northwestern, Western Michigan traveling to Buffalo, and Central Michigan visiting Eastern Michigan.


Hope College’s effort to have its volleyball team play at home in the NCAA Division III tournament finals at DeVos Fieldhouse next weekend were thwarted by Wittenberg in Friday’s regional semifinals at Grand Rapids, as the Flying Dutch fell in straight sets. On Saturday, the cross-country teams compete in NCAA Division III regional action at Anderson, Indiana, while the swimming and diving teams host Kalamazoo in a dual meet at the Dow Center.


Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka each scored 25 points, as Oklahoma City handled the visiting Pistons on Friday night, 105-94. Still winless, Detroit is in Houston on Saturday evening, while the Chicago Bulls welcome Minnesota to the United Center on Saturday night.


Brendan Smith and Riley Sheahan each scored twice in leading the Griffins to a 5-3 victory over visiting Rockford on Friday night. Grand Rapids skates in Peoria against the Rivermen on Saturday evening.


The state major college basketball season began on Friday, with Michigan State falling to Connecticut at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, 66-62, and the other teams all winning at home – Michigan 100, Slippery Rock 62; Eastern Michigan 66, Rochester 52; Detroit 88, Northern Michigan 53; and Oakland 96, Albion 62. On Saturday afternoon, Western Michigan starts its campaign at Cornell.
