LAKESHORE (WKZO) -- Near record heat drove thousands to the Lake Michigan Beaches. There were traffic jams reported in many beach towns as folks from the interior of Michigan looked for relief from temperatures in the 90’s, and to take advantage of the three day holiday weekend for their first visit of the season.
It may have been a hassle for the beach-goers, but for tourism officials and lakeshore businesses, it’s just what they want to see on the opening weekend of the season.
It means if the weather continues to cooperate, they could have a banner year for tourism. The one dark note, Grand Haven Police say a man had to be rescued from the waters of Lake Michigan at about 2:30 Sunday afternoon by other swimmers, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
As hot as it was in the air and on the sand, the lake water is still a bit on the chilly side at around 55-degrees.
