LaOTTO, IN (WHTC) - A 78-year-old Zeeland woman died, her husband was hurt, and a police investigation continues into a three-vehicle crash in northeast Indiana last Thursday afternoon.
According to authorities, an SUV driven by 79-year-old John Vander Kooi was on state road 3 near LaOtto, north of Fort Wayne, when his vehicle, along with a car, were slammed by a semi that apparently drove through a red light on state road 205. The force of the collision severely injured Vander Kooi’s 78-year-old wife Elaine, who was taken off life support and succumbed at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne about 24 hours later.
John Vander Kooi and the driver of the automobile, 56-year-old Michael Baker of Fort Wayne, were treated and released at that hospital; the truck driver, 55-year-old Lane Towers of Edon, Ohio was not hurt, but was initially charged with disregarding a stop light, and may face more charges after a police investigation into the incident concludes.
Visitation for Elaine Vander Kooi is this afternoon and evening, with a funeral tomorrow morning, all at Ottawa Reformed Church in West Olive.
