In sports…Justin Verlander came within two outs of his third career no-hitter Friday night as the Tigers blanked Pittsburgh, 6-0 at Comerica Park. Verlander settled for a one-hitter after Josh Harrison broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single in the ninth. The Tigers and Pirates meet again this afternoon inDetroit, with broadcast time on 1450 WHTC at 3:40.
In Chicago, Gordon Beckham’s eighth-inning home run lifted the White Sox over the Cubs, 3-2 at Wrigley Field in the renewal of the crosstown series. It was the final game for Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, who said that he would retire after his next appearance. Wood struck out the last batter he faced on three pitches.
In the Midwest League, the Whitecaps open a series tonight at Fifth Third Ballpark against South Bend, after falling to Great Lakes Friday 3-2.
