HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - Holland's annual signature event is underway.
Under cloudy, cool conditions, the Tulip Time Festival kicked off on Saturday morning with 10K and 5K runs from Kollen Park. Organizers say that Fred Bunn (35:41) and Shelly Miller (46:16) took top honors in the longer race; Kristopher Koster (15:06) and Alicia Sherwood (18;27) crossed the finish line first in the shorter length competition.
Good crowds were seen at various venues on Saturday, despite mild late winter and early spring weather conditions that led to as much as 70 percent of planted tulips in and around Holland already at or past peak blooms. However, festival organizers had stressed throughout April that visitors should come early to see the flowers, and return from May 5-12 for the other festival attractions.
While Kollen Park was a center of attraction for Tulip Time, climaxing with a fireworks show at dusk, in and around the Holland Civic Center was also busy with the annual Fiesta festival, and Borculo had its annual Dandelion Festival conclude on Saturday.
