GM retiree ordered to pay back over $1-million after ATM error

by

DETROIT (WKZO) -- A 56-year-old retired General Motors autoworker from Flint will have to pay back more than one-million dollars after a computer error allowed him to withdraw unlimited amounts of money from ATMs at Detroit's three casinos.

In March, Ronald Page pleaded guilty to theft of bank funds, and yesterday a federal judge in Detroit ordered him to pay restitution to Bank of America and also sentenced him to 15 months in prison.  Over a two-week period in August 2009, Page made withdrawals between 51-thousand and 515-thousand dollars, and by the time the bank discovered the computer glitch, he had taken over 1.5-million dollars from the ATMs.

Page could have faced nearly four years in prison, but prosecutors recommended 15 months because they said the problem was partially caused by the bank.
