ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) - A little more than a year ago, a drunken driver was going eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-196 between Zeeland and Hudsonville when his vehicle slammed head on into another vehicle. Both drivers involved were killed, along with one of the passengers in the victim’s car. Since then, the family of 19-year-old Amy Linares had put up a white cross on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes in her memory, and the shrine grew to include flowers, trim, statues and decorative lighting. Citing state law prohibiting such memorials on highways as a distraction, authorities made the family take the trimmings down over the weekend.
