HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - Holland Public Safety firefighters responded to a house blaze on River Avenue south of the downtown area on Friday afternoon. Investigators believe that careless smoking ignited the flames in a screened porch at the back of the two-story structure. Two persons inside of the home escaped safely, no firefighters were injured, and damage was estimated at around five thousand dollars. The house is near the site of a foreclosed home on River Avenue that was torn down by the city earlier this spring following a lawsuit to save the structure by a bank against the city, claiming that it was trying to repair code violations.
