SOUTH BEND, IN (WHTC) - “Mud Racing,” involving vehicles attempting to get through a mud pit, was held for the first time at the Ottawa County Fair on Saturday evening. While that event took place safely, a similar type of competition held at the same time at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds in South Bend wasn’t as fortunate. Steve DeLeeuw, who’s a part of a lumber company in Holland that bears the family name, died when his vehicle skimmed across a mud pit, barrel-rolled into a concrete barrier, flipped over and landed on a chain link fence. DeLeeuw died en route to a local hospital. The event was completed without further incident, and spectators attending weren’t told of the fatality. An investigation continues; funeral arrangements for DeLeeuw are pending.
