HOLLAND (WHTC) - It has now become a record day in Holland for heat. The mercury reached 102 degrees at West Michigan Regional Airport shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday, tying the record for the hottest day ever in the Tulip City. The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids says the mercury reached 102 on two other occasions: on July 30, 1913 and July 21, 1934. An excessive heat warning for Ottawa and Allegan counties has been extended to 8 p.m. Saturrday night, and we received word Friday afternoon from the Holland Department of Public Safety fire services division that a burning ban is now in effect throughout the city. Fire Services Captain Chris Tinney says the ban covers all open burning, including recreational fires. However, it does NOT apply to the use of approved grills and barbecues manufactured for the purpose of cooking. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
