ANN ARBOR, MI (WTVB) - President Obama is pushing hard to make college more affordable. A new administration proposal would shift federal dollars away from colleges and universities that don't rein in soaring tuition and other student costs. Speaking at the University of Michigan Friday, Obama said a college education cannot be viewed as a luxury for a privileged few.
Under the administration's proposal, incentives would also be offered to colleges and universities based on graduation rates. In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, the President put colleges and universities on notice. He said, "If you can't stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down."
