PORT SHELDON TWP., MI (WHTC) - The Port Sheldon Township Planning Commission last night tabled a special-use permit request by Blueberry farmer Carl Nelson, who wants to allow migrant workers to live in a house he’s planning to remodel on his property on 160th Avenue and to work in his fields. The panel agreed with a township board recommendation to put the matter on hold while leaders review regulations regarding migrant housing. The proposal was the subject of an inflammatory flier sent to neighboring residents last year, alleging the project would lead to increased crime and decreased property values. Critics of the flier say it was racist.
