LANSING (WKZO) -- A new law is in effect in Michigan that bans employers and educational institutions from asking applicants to provide usernames and passwords to their private Internet accounts.

Governor Rick Snyder signed the bill on Friday.  The bill also makes it illegal for employers to demand passwords of employees social media accounts.

Violators could face up to 93 days in jail and a one-thousand dollar fine.
