MUSKEGON (WKZO) -- State Police have been asked to investigate the death of an inmate at the Muskegon County Jail over the weekend. Initial reports say that 34-year-old Dahnontae McKinley had been in the facility for about two weeks on a robbery and domestic violence warrant, when he reportedly tried to escape an isolation cell by pushing past two deputies on Saturday at about 3PM.
Sheriff Dean Roesler says McKinley had been in the special isolation cell for a week for causing a disturbance in another unit at the jail. He struggled and tried to escape again, and was pepper sprayed and strapped to a restraint chair.
When they checked on him 30 minutes later, he was unresponsive and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He leaves behind a wife and 6 kids. An autopsy is planned.
