ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- The pharmacy linked to this year's deadly meningitis outbreak is seeking bankruptcy protection. New England Compounding Center has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

It's been shut down since October after people who used a steroid made by the company came down with meningitis. More than 35 people have died, ten of them in Michigan, and hundreds have been left with huge medical bills fighting the infections.

Many have been treated at a hospital in Ann Arbor which has developed a specialty for this infection, and received permission to add staff and equipment to combat it.

The problem was linked to a contaminant in the drug. Court documents show New England Compounding Center has up to ten-million dollars in assets, and that won’t go far once all the lawsuits are filed.
