HUDSONVILLE, MI (WHTC) - A 28-year-old Zeeland man faces life in prison as a repeat offender if convicted of first-degree child abuse charges. Ryan Kupres was bound over for trial yesterday as prosecutors claim that he beat his five-month-old daughter. Doctors at both Spectrum-Zeeland Community Hospital and DeVos Children’s Hospital concurred that they spotted injuries on the body of Layla Kupres that were consistent with a victim of abuse when she was treated this past March for what her parents called “flu-like symptoms.” A lengthy investigation ensued, which included Ryan Kupres surrendering his parental rights, and his eventual arrest last month. The girl is in foster care, while Kupres is free on bond. He was convicted of a similar charge more than four years ago involving another child.
