WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC) - A phone scam struck several older residents in and around Ottawa County yesterday. According to Sheriff’s Sergeant John Wolffis, a “very believable and very skilled” person convinces the victims that they are legitimately in line to receive cash, a vehicle, property or another type of large prize from a representative in the area who is ready to deliver it to their home. The caller would tell the victim that, to be eligible for the prize, they must purchase a pre-paid credit card for a specific amount of money, and then call back with the card number. They then would be told to wait for the prize package, which never comes. No suspects are in custody, and Wolffis advises residents to never give personal or credit information to any unknown caller, as this string of incidents remains under investigation.
