COVERT, MI (WKZO/WHTC) - For the second time since June, the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant south of South Haven is offline. The facility in Covert shut down on Sunday when a minor leak of cooling water, dropping a third of a gallon of water per minute, was spotted at a different spot than a similar leak in mid-June that caused a month-long shutdown of electricity generation. Officials of plant operator Entergy say that this leak was from the primary coolant system in the containment building, but no radioactive material was released into the environment, and didn’t put a timetable as to when the plant would be back to full operation. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission downgraded Palisades’ rating after several closures last year due to operational errors.
