The actor, who played Ray Mullan in U.K. TV show Emmerdale between 2001 and 2002, admitted owning the plants when he appeared at Liverpool North Community Justice Centre in Liverpool, England, on Monday (06Aug12).

Gubbins pleaded guilty to production of a controlled Class B drug and insisted the plants were for his own personal use, but he will face a substantial prison sentence if he fails to convince a judge he was not growing cannabis for financial gain.

Speaking at the hearing, judge David Fletcher, said, ""I have to decide if I accept your contention this cannabis was grown for your own personal use. If I decide this was a commercial enterprise you'll lose a substantial amount of your sentence discount. There is a set-up there which is capable of something more adventurous.""

As the basis of the actor's plea was disputed by the prosecution, another hearing has been scheduled for next month (Sep12).

If Gubbins is able to prove the plants were for his personal use, he may escape a custodial sentence. He was granted bail.
