Mother charged with murder of 6-year-old son found in Maine

By Zach Howard

CONWAY, Mass (Reuters) - A Texas woman was charged with second-degree murder in the apparent asphyxiation death of her young son whose body was found alongside a road in Maine, authorities said on Thursday.

Julianne McCrery, 42, of Irving, Texas, was arrested as a fugitive from justice in Concord, Massachusetts on Wednesday and then charged with killing Camden Hughes, 6, in Hampton, New Hampshire, said New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney.

McCrery was expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in Concord, Massachusetts District Court, Delaney said.

Authorities said the boy was killed in New Hampshire on Saturday and his body was found in neighboring Maine later that day.

The body of the boy, who remained unidentified until Wednesday, was found by a local resident along a road in a remote wooded area of South Berwick, Maine, close to the New Hampshire border. Police called the death suspicious.

Delaney said preliminary findings from an autopsy performed by Maine's Chief Medical Examiner showed the cause of death was asphyxiation and the manner of death a homicide, but further studies are pending.

Police located McCrery Wednesday morning while following tips from the public about a vehicle that matched the description of a blue pickup truck spotted near the child's body in Maine on Saturday. When found, she was the lone occupant of the vehicle at a highway rest stop in Chelmsford, Mass.

Police said she agreed to be questioned on Wednesday at the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Concord. She was transported to the hospital later in the day for medical evaluation.
