UNDATED (WKZO) - Suicide is the third leading cause of death for kids between ten and 24 years old. The MINDS organization was started in Michigan 13-years-ago to educate students about mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and suicide.
Founder Heather Irish says that since we know that accidents are the number one way we lose our kids, we make them wear helmets when they ride their bikes. We make them wear seatbelts in the car. And we prevent drowning by teaching our kids how to swim. Irish says mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. She says it needs to be addressed, talked about and appropriately treated. She says that if a mental illness is properly treated, a lot of suicides can be prevented.
