UNDATED (WHTC News) - Alex Avila homered and drove in two runs as the Tigers edged visiting Texas last night, 5-4. Doug Fister scattered eight hits over seven innings in winning his Detroit pitching debut. The Bengals go for the series sweep of the defending American League champion Rangers at Comerica Park this afternoon. Matt Garza and two relievers teamed on a four-hit shutout in the Cubs’ 1-0 win at Pittsburgh last night. Starlin Castro’s eight-inning homer was the difference offensively. Chicago goes for the four-game series sweep of the Pirates at PNC Park this evening.

Former Tiger Curtis Granderson drove in five runs, while Robinson Cano and Eric Chavez each knocked in four, as the visiting Yankees routed the White Sox last night, 18-7. Kalamazoo’s Derek Jeter had five hits for the Bronx Bombers. Chicago looks to avoid being swept by New York in the finale of the four-game series at US Cellular Field this evening.
