MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) – The D-N-R has re-opened most of Council Grounds state park in Merrill following a tornado that ripped through a week-and-a-half ago.
Some trails on the east side of the park remain closed while officials develop logging contracts to help remove and salvage downed trees. The southeast picnic area also remains closed until further clean up can take place.
“Crews have worked hard to clear roads and harzards and make Council Grounds safe for visitors,” said state parks director Dan Schuller. “The park staff is ready to welcome park users.”
The campground area should open on schedule by early May.
The park had been closed since the tornado struck April 10th. Crews have spent the last 11 days clearing trees toppled by the tornado, which had maximum wind speeds of 140 miles-per-hour.
