(Holland, MI - WHTC News) - Skating outdoors in downtown Holland will become a reality this winter.

No, this isn’t an indictment of the Tulip City’s Streets Division if an inability to keep up with snow and ice makes roads slippery for drivers. Instead, City Council last night approved constructing a temporary natural skating rink for the downtown district in an effort to attract more business during the “off-season.”

Such an outlay would cost six thousand dollars from the city’s Municipal Capital Projects Fund, and At-Large Councilwoman Nancy DeBoer admits that this is an “experiment.” Three sites for the rink are under consideration – two of them in an open area on the block between 8th Street and the 7th Street parking structure, and the other at Riverside Park. A determination of where exactly that rink will be should come by Council's next meeting in two weeks; the materials for the rink should be in Holland by the end of November.
