(Allegan, MI - Midwest Communications News) - We now know why the alleged co-conspirators in the murder of Brandon Silverlight are being tried separately.
In opening arguments yesterday, the attorney for Alison Martin blamed her former fiancé, Justin Terpstra, for the crime, claiming his client did not plan, nor participate in the brutal torture, stabbing, beating and torching that resulted in Silverlight’s death. However, the prosecutor claimed in his opening statement that Martin was obsessed with Silverlight, and convinced Terpstra that the only way to keep him from standing between them was to kill him.
Silverlight, of South Haven, had previously attended school at WMU. His ravaged and badly burned body was found next to his burning car on a dead end road in southern Allegan County last November.
Testimony will continue today. Terpstra's trial is slated for next month.
