KALAMAZOO -- Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell has been selected by area Democratic leaders to replace Rep. Robert Jones on the State Senate ballot following his unexpected death over the weekend. Everyone involved says Hopewell was the obvious choice and the favorite of the Jones family.
Hopewell says it’s a bittersweet time for him, and now comes the campaigning. He has 13 days to introduce himself to those parts of the 20th district where he may not be as well known, and says he plans to make the most of them.
The Secretary of State’s office has ruled that anyone who has taken out an absentee ballot must now submit a written notice to their local clerk to get a new corrected one, a decision that State Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer says is unfortunate and puts them at a disadvantage.
Brewer won’t discuss what kind of effort the state party plans to put into the short campaign between now and election day, but its clear this is one they think they can win. It will be a challenge given the head start that Lawton Republican Tonya Schuitmaker now has.
