MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - The public is now being allowed back in the Capitol building in Madison following an evacuation Tuesday morning.  Authorities told people to evacuate just at 9:55 a.m. due to an unverified threat.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports the public was also told to stay off the Capitol square sidewalks and lawn. Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs said he would issue a statement later in the day about the reason for the closure.

Earlier reports indicated the Capitol was evacuated due to an apparent bomb threat.

State Department of Administration spokesperson Emily Winecke says the Capitol was evacuated because of an "unverified threat to the building" and more info would be released after the building was searched.

The state Department of Administration oversees the Capitol Police.
