(Washington, DC) -- Detroit-area Congressman Sander Levin is taking over the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee. The powerful panel is responsible for making laws governing federal programs such as taxes, unemployment, Medicare and welfare. The 78-year-old Democrat is succeeding New York's Charles Rangel heading up the panel. Rangel has temporarily stepped aside due to an ethics investigation. Sander Levin is the older brother of Michigan's senior U.S. Senator Carl Levin.
