Ready or not, the Tigers are about to be tested against some of the best teams in the majors as Detroit tonight begins a three-series, nine game road trip, starting with the Mets in New York. Justin Verlander will be on the mound for Detroit.
It was a light schedule yesterday around baseball with a day off for the Tigers, White Sox and Cubs and just 3 interleague games played on Monday. Detroit hopes to improve on its 13-and-19 road mark this season but just in case they lay an egg on this trip, the Tigers padded their record recently with an 8-and-1 home stand against a trio of soft National League teams that left them at 38-and-30 and a game-and-a-half behind the American League Central leading Minnesota Twins.
After leaving New York on Thursday, the Tigers head to Atlanta, which has the best record in the senior circuit. Following a weekend series with the Braves, it’s on to Minnesota and 3 games against the Twins. Detroit yesterday said it was brining up right-handed reliever Jay Sborz from Toledo to replace Rick Porcello. The 25-year old Sborz has 15 saves with the Mudhens this season and a 3.04 E-R-A.
