(Ann Arbor, MI) -- A new report from the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation, a partnership of the University of Michigan and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, found that 39-percent of the state's residents were uninsured or insured through public programs in 2007-2008. The study released today shows that there were two-billion dollars in unpaid medical bills at state hospitals in 2008. The report's authors found that if health care reform started this year, the number of uninsured would fall from more than one-million to fewer than 150-thousand. Michigan has also fallen from best in the nation in 2005 to sixth-worst in 2008 for the number of uninsured children. The report adds that Michigan still has some of the most affordable health insurance rates in the U.S.
