"True Blood" bows atop video sales charts

By Thomas K. Arnold

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Vampire mania has reared its bloody head on disc, with HBO's Season 2 set of "True Blood" topping the national home video sales charts during its first week in stores, beating a stiff challenge from a high-profile film.

"True Blood: The Complete Second Season" bowed at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Nielsen's dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended May 30, besting fellow newcomer "Dear John," a romantic drama that came to disc after grossing more than $80 million in theaters.

"Dear John," starring Channing Tatum ("Step Up") and Amanda Seyfried ("Mamma Mia!"), debuted at No. 2 on the overall sales chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, where it was perched right behind second-ranked "Avatar."

"Avatar" finished third on the First Alert sales chart, while "The Road," a post-apocalyptic thriller based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy ("No Country for Old Men"), ranked No. 4 on both the overall sales chart and the Blu-ray list. "The Road" generated just $8.1 million during a limited theatrical release.

"Dear John" did manage to top Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, while "The Road" debuted at No. 3. "Valentine's Day," the previous week's top renter, slipped to No. 2.
