(Lansing, MI) -- A bill is before a state Senate committee to expand Michigan's public smoking ban. The gaming floors of Detroit's three casinos are currently exempt from the ban, and the legislation from Democratic Senator Ray Basham of Wayne County would repeal that exemption. The Native American casinos are also exempt, but are not included in Basham's bill, since by federal law those facilities are considered to be in a sovereign nation. Michigan’s current smoking ban that took effect on May 1st outlaws lighting up in bars, restaurants and many other workplaces.
