(Lansing, MI) -- Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Weaver has stepped down, altering the balance of power on the state's high court. Governor Granholm has appointed Appeals Judge Alton Davis to fill her position, effective immediately. He was appointed to the 4th District Court of Appeals by Granholm in 2005. The move gives Democrats a majority on the court for the first time in a decade. Weaver had planned to run for reelection in November as an independent candidate instead of on the Republican ticket, but instead decided to retire. She had previously intended to resign five years ago, but changed her mind.
