NILES (WKZO) -- How young is too young to convict a child of an adult crime? A 14 year-old boy from Niles who shot and killed his grandfather as he slept has just been convicted of the very adult crime.
Prosecutors say that Dakotah Eliason confessed to the shooting of 69 year-old Jesse Miles in March, and his trial took place this week in Berrien County Trial Court.
On Thursday afternoon, the jury deliberated for a few hours before coming back with guilty verdicts on both counts -- first degree murder and felony firearm. The trial was handled personally by Berrien County Prosecutor Art Cotter, who told us that it's been a hard case for all involved -- especially the boy's family.
Cotter said that he reviewed the psychological reports on Eliason several times, and concluded that the boy had to be tried as an adult for premeditated murder. Eliason will likely be sentenced to life in prison.
