(Port Sheldon Twp., MI - WHTC News) - The combination of a setting sun and mistaken assumption landed two West Olive women in the hospital.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brian Buter, 16-year-old Austin Swift was apparently driving towards his Blue Fox Drive home in Port Sheldon Township, while his 48-year-old mother Pamela was pushing a stroller carrying her 10-month-old granddaughter Hayliegh, with the child’s mother, 21-year-old Amanda Lawrence, walking alongside. Austin Swift told deputies that the glare from the setting sun kept him from seeing the group, while Pamela Swift said that she thought her son had seen them, so they didn’t move off of the side of the road.
The teen struck the group with the SUV he was driving. Lawrence was airlifted to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in critical condition, while Pamela Swift was taken to Holland Hospital in stable condition with a lower leg injury, and the infant suffered only cuts and bruises that needed only treatment at the scene. The teen wasn’t hurt.
The incident remains under investigation.
