Reforms Put Michigan into "Race to the Top" Funding Conversation from Washington

LANSING -- The Michigan Senate has agreed to reforms that will put Michigan into the running for federal “Race to the Top” funding, which could bring as much as 400 million dollars to the state from Washington.

The legislation would allow for alternative paths to teacher certification, provide specific support systems for low-performing schools, and increase student choice by allowing more high-performing charter schools.

Committee Chair Wayne Kuipers of Holland sponsored three of the bills, and says that he’s looking beyond this financial carrot that Washington is dangling to state houses nationwide.

With Detroit Democrat Buzz Thomas authoring the other two pieces of legislation, this package is “creating momentum in a bi-partisan way,” according to Kuipers.
