Co-Opting A Miracle

This morning while perusing the headlines I came across this interesting tidbit: The Gay Pride Oreo Cookie celebrating homosexuality.

Meredith Bennett-Smith wrote the following on csmonitor.com:

"An ad featuring a gay pride-themed Oreo is stirring up viral controversy today after Kraft posted the rainbow-colored Oreo on the popular treat's Facebook page. The ad, which featured an oversized cookie with rainbow-hued frosting layers above the date and accompanying caption, “Proudly support love!” was originally posted to Oreo’s profile Monday evening.

June has special significance in the LGBT community.President Barack Obama declared the month Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Pride Month on June 1, 2009. Many US cities, including New York and San Francisco, held annual Pride events over the weekend.

So far, over 167,000 Facebook users have “liked” the photoshopped image of the self-proclaimed “world’s favorite cookie.” It has racked up 48,853 shares and over 22,000 comments – not all of them positive, and quite a few vitriolic.

“I’ll never buy Oreo again,” one commenter wrote.

“Disgusted with oreos,” wrote another. “Being gay is an abomination in God’s eyes i wont be buying them anymore.”

The most inspired complaint came from one of my friends who is also a fellow Christian. Her outrage wasn't so much over Kraft Foods Inc. obvious attempt to please Homosexuals, but more with Homosexuals use the rainbow as a symbol for homosexuality, bi-sexuality and trans gendered individuals.

She pointed out that the rainbow was originally meant as a sign from God that He would never destroy the Earth by water ever again.  According to the account in Genesis 6:9-8:22 where we are told by the author of the first five books of the Bible, Moses, that an angry God destroyed the Earth because as stated in Gen 6:5 "the wickedness of man was great in the land, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."  So God decided to destroy all human life on earth save for one righteous man and his immediate family along with a pair of every animal from the earth at that time.  After 40-days and 40-nights of relentless rain the ark was found resting atop the foothills on Ararat.

God then made a covenant with Noah (a covenant is a conditional promise made between God and man) in which he said "I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.  And it shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the land, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.  When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth."

She like many other Christians are incensed that homosexuals use the rainbow as a sign that represents "gay pride", when the original intent was spiritual.  They feel that we are once again turning back towards wickedness and that this co-opting of God's covenant symbol is just plain wrong.

Fortunately most Christians are un-phased by this because their faith is not shaken by symbols but rooted in the Holy Spirit.  And as long as they know in their hearts what the rainbow means to them, it wouldn't matter if Hitler himself used the rainbow.  They believe that satan has a counterfeit for everything in Gods Kingdom in order to cause many to stray, and will continue to "stand in the gap" for who the scriptures call's "the lost sheep" showing love and kindness to the sinner, while despising the sin.  Even if the sin is their own!

A born again Christian doesn't think they are better than anyone else, but rather, feel they are better off because of their relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
