West Michigan Mayors Are Asked To Support Drivers Licenses For Illegal Immigrants
Apparently spurred on by the DREAM Act, young illegal immigrants in West Michigan are asking local government leaders to follow Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell's lead bu supporting a push to have the state grant drivers licenses to those eligible for deportation referral.
Sandra Chang wrote on mlive.com that the group is sending area mayors letters requesting they use their influence in Lansing to change state policy backed by Gov. Rick Snyder and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson that denies driving rights to those individuals.
Many Americans feel that the biggest obsticle for those seeking drivers licenses is the fact that they are still illegal despite the enactment of the Deferred Action Plan Childhood Arrivals, which the President put into place by circumventing Congress.
Gisgie Davila Gendreau, a Secretary of State spokeswoman, said the agency is following the federal guidelines. “They should focus their efforts in the federal government," she said. "They stated that DACA does not conferred legal status and we are just following the law."
