That is a famous line from Shakespeare and a very pertinent question that I would like to pose to Rob Bell, the charismatic pastor of the 7000 member Mars Hill Bible Church. However, based upon some of his controversial teachings I think that the Shakespeare question should be asked of his faith: to be a Christian or not to be a Christian?
When I first saw the TIME magazine cover this week with the caption "WHAT IF THERE'S NO HELL" and Rob Bell's name together I knew that trouble was brewing again, or better stated, HE was brewing trouble again. This time over the existence of Hell, sin, salvation and judgment. The problem is, for a so called "Bible church", Bell emphasises discussion over dogmatic teaching (Holy Spirit lead study and teaching). Not quite in the example of the disciples is that?
And what prompted Bell to pen his latest unconscious "christian" best seller? An encounter with a sticky note left next to a Gandhi quotation at an art exhibit his church put on that read "Reality Check: He's in hell." Bell recalls thinking
"really?"
Gandhi's in hell? He is?
We have confirmation of this?
Somebody knows this? And that somebody decided to take on the responsibility of letting the rest of us know?
Uh yeah "Pastor" Rob, several in fact, chief among them the Apostle to the Gentiles, The Apostle Paul. There was also John The Baptist, oh and Jesus Christ himself mentioned something about hell. Does Rob Bell know something that THEY don't know??
