LOSING OLD FRIENDS:

Another old friend passed away recently.  Fred S. Bertsch, Jr. passed away at age 92 at his home in Florida.  Some of you may remember his as he lived on South Shore Drive for many years, attended Lakeview School (where I met him) and Hope College. Fred chose a military career in 1940, signing up with the U.S. Navy.  He was in Pearl Harbor when the Japs attacked us in 1941.  Much of his Navy career was aboard the destroyer U.S,S.Case.  He was trained as a pilot and flew during the Korean War.  After his Navel career, he returned to Holland, taught and became principle of Holland High School. He wrote about most of his life in three books, when he retired in Florida.  His final resting place is Arlington National Cemetary.  So Long, Captain.
