I learned much to my dismay, from the Sunday Sentinel that Bittersweet is an invasive species. This according to the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. I thought back to the many years my late wife and I had driven and sometimes walked a lot to find this beautiful fall plant that has the bright orange berries. One of the favorite spots was in Macatawa where A bountiful planting graced the hill where the old machinery from the "Angel Flight" had been abandoned. Birds like the beries also, and many people make extra money, locating, picking and bunching the colorful fall bouquets, selling them at roadside stands.
Apparently spraying the Mt Baldhead area with a herbicide, has killed much of this invader and many trees along with it.
Results and how to proceed are up in the air. Meanwhile if you see it on sale this year. Stock up. It keeps for years.
