MAY IS THE FIRST NATIONAL WINE MONTH.
I USUALLY DON'T IMBIBE, BUT PAUL IN THE BIBLE TALKS ABOUT "A LITTLE WINE FOR THY STOMACH'S SAKE. SO OCCASIONALLY I WILL HAVE A SMALL GLASS, BUT THERE ARE FEW WINES THAT I CAN RAVE ABOUT. SOMETIMES I WONDER IF THE PRICE OF A WINE IS SET TO APPEAL TO THE UPPER CLASS. DOES PRICE SET THE TASTE OR QUALITY?
MY GRANDFATHER MADE WINE--GREW AND CRUSHED HIS OWN GRAPES AND LET IT SEASON JUST RIGHT IN WOODEN KEGS. HE OFTEN SERVED A SMALL GLASS TO VISITORS AND IF I WAS AROUND, EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT OF AGE, I WOULD GET A TASTE. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL CLEAR RED WINE THAT WARMED AS IT WENT DOWN. I SUPPOSE ENOUGH OF IT WOULD MAKE A PERSON DRUNK, BUT WE NEVER TRIED IT TO THAT EXTENT.
HIS EXPERTISE AND RECIPE WENT WITH HIM TO HIS GRAVE AND THE GRAPES ARE GONE. I HAVE NEVER FOUND A WINE THAT TASTES LIKE GRANDPA'S.
