Energy Busters and Boosters

by Christy Taylor

Food is your body’s main source of energy fuel, but the wrong choices can leave you foggy, groggy and exhausted instead!

And some energy busters to avoid are things you’d least expect! Like sugar substitutes

Even though they'll save you a few calories, your body is unable to digest most sweetners.
They also can cause stomach distress like bloating and gas--TOTAL energy drainers.

Because of the sugar substitutes, you should also limit your sugar free gum. Plus, the act of chewing alone can cause you to swallow air—another cause of bloating and gas.

For extra energy, add healthy fats to your diet like avocados, nuts and olive oil.

Processed foods will also drag you down. A good rule of thumb is to opt for foods that have the shortest list of ingredients.

Never eat sugar by itself. Save treats for after a meal with both protein and fat. Doing so will slow your body’s absorbs ion of sugar, and prevent sharp ups and downs.

And water water water. We’re told all the time to drink up…and energy is one more reason to follow that advice! It’s amazing how worn down you will feel when your body is dehydrated. Start by just having an 8 ounce glass of water with every meal. Allow yourself to enjoy fruit for breakfast! Another tasty way to replenish your body’s fluids.

And finally, the big debate, energy drink vs energy bar. When you’re in a pinch, go for the bar! Drinks cause a quick boost in energy but it’s usually short lived. A bar will keep your body going longer and has more nutritional value—but remember, the less ingredients, the better.
